Beaverton Family Y Member Turns 100
Clyde Routon reached his centennial birthday at the Beaverton Family YMCA. You can check out the story My Workout that features Clyde and his story that appeared in The Oregonian. Routon works out two to three days a week and enjoys the treadmill, the rowing machines and his Senior Circuit Weight Training class. He still enjoys hobbies like taking care of his yard and growing tomatoes, but he says he’s “gettin’ lazy.” Thanks Clyde for your dedication to staying healthy.

Active Older Adult Enjoys Life After Retirement
After Phillip Kantas retired from his position at AT&T 15 years ago, he took tennis lessons and enjoyed playing. After a year of retirement he joined the Beaverton Family YMCA on the advice of a good friend. "I've been addicted ever since," he says. "It's the best thing I've ever done." Originally it was something to get him out of the house. Now, he's enjoying his first-ever regular workout as well as the chance to socialize. His cholesterol and blood pressure were a bit high, but not anymore. He isn't on any medications and he sleeps better too. In 2006 at a competition for YMCA members, he came in second behind a 17-year-old in a times sit-up contest. He also placed first in his age group in the overall strength and endurance competition. "I am a great believer in life after retirement. I hear so many people say, 'I don't know what I'll do after I retire.' I tell them I found a whole new world out there that's great for you, healthwise and time well spent. Join a health club." Kantas says he feels better and has more energy now then he did 25 years ago. At his yearly physical, his doctor tells him to keep on doing whetever he's doing. He intends to do that.
